Razor Dispenser
Some razors come with a razor blade dispenser, which makes replacing razor blades
safer and easier. Simply use the dispenser to slide on the new blade once the old
one has been removed. Dispose of the old blade in a puncture-proof container.
Electric Clippers
Although electric clippers can be used to cut an entire head, they are
generally used for creating specific effects in certain areas of the head.
Some clippers come with attachments, called guards, which range from
1/8" (.30 cm) to 1" (2.5 cm). These guards enable you to consistently
cut the hair at the same length as the size of the guard (i.e., a 1/8" guard
will cut the hair 1/8" from the scalp). When extremely short lengths are
desired, no guard is used. Another way to determine and vary the dis-
tance from the scalp while cutting is the clipper-over-comb technique.
With this technique the clipper is positioned on top of the comb while
cutting. Electric clippers are available with different blade sizes. Small
clippers, known as trimmers or edgers, are used to outline and refine the
hairline, beard, mustache and sideburn areas.
Parts of the Clipper
The stationary blade of a clipper, also called the heel, is similar in
function to the stationary blade of the shear. The moveable blade
moves in a side-to-side motion as it cuts the hair. The adustable
blade lever is used to adjust the stationary blade. Some clippers have
an electric cord, while others are charged on a power base.
A stiff-bristle clipper brush is used to clean the implement after each use. Remove the blades for
cleaning. Do not clean the clipper while it is turned on. The detachable blade and heel should be
kept disinfected. Clipper oil provides lubrication for the moving parts of the
implement to keep them in good working condition, but should be used spar-
ingly. Read manufacturer's directions for cleaning guidelines.
How to Hold the Clipper
The clipper can be held in a number of different ways, depending on the area
of the head that is being cut, the line or angle at which you are cutting and
your level of comfort.
One way to hold a clipper is to position your palm over the
clipper and position your thumb on the side of the clipper.
