Shear
A shear creates a clean, blunt edge. By varying the
position of the shear as you cut, you can create subtle
variations in the hair.
Taper Shear
A taper shear creates a distinct and regular alternation
of shorter and longer lengths. More, closely spaced
teeth will remove a greater amount of hair, while fewer,
widely spaced teeth will remove less hair.
Razor
A razor creates tapering or an angle effect on the end
of each strand, which produces a softer, somewhat
diffused form line. This tapering may occur on the top
or bottom of the strand, depending on the cutting
technique you use.
Clipper
A clipper can achieve a variety of effects, depending on
the blade attachment (guard) used. For instance, it can
be used to create clean, precise lines or a soft, broom-
like effect. This tool generally cuts hair most quickly.
Combs
Combs are used to distribute and control the hair before
and, sometimes, while cutting. The amount of space
between the teeth of the comb is very important in
determining which comb best suits your purpose. Gen-
erally, larger combs with wider spaces between the teeth
are used to control larger amounts of hair, while smaller
combs, often with a tapered shape, are used when
cutting smaller sections of hair and very short hair.
