Tell your employer about any conflicts you may have with your work schedule during the
interview. Before you accept employment with a salon, school or product manufacturer, etc., look
at all the benefits offered. Determine which ones are important to you. Will you be happy without
the benefits you want most?
Your New Job
In a salon, there are several approaches used to instruct new employees. Two of the most common
approaches are:
1. Many salons have a general orientation program to familiarize the new employee with the
work habits and standards of the salon. Most salons have Employee Handbooks, detail-
ing such information. General orientation might also include a few days of technical train-
ing to familiarize you with techniques that are particular to your new salon position.
2. Another approach has the new stylist assigned as an assistant or apprentice with an expe-
rienced stylist in the salon until she/he is totally familiar with salon procedures and prac-
tices. This method varies in length of time based on your skill level and expected expertise.
Some salons prefer to offer a combination of assisting and assigning you new clients, which
provides you an opportunity to build a clientele of your own.
Note: A combination of a general orientation program and assisting is also a
common practice with new employees.
PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The beauty industry is multifaceted, drawing on a multitude of job
descriptions, positions and career directions. Often it is assumed, incor-
rectly, that the person "behind the chair" is the only "important" part
of the industry. Take a moment and think of all the professionals
needed to make a stylist's day complete. Building solid professional
relationships with other professionals is your foundation for the future.
Your future is ready and waiting to unfold and your opportunities are
virtually unlimited.
