Facial Masks
Facial masks (or packs) have many different benefits,
which include hydration (adding moisture), tightening of
the pores and reduction of excess oil. Facial masks can be
used in conjunction with facial services or they can be
offered as a separate service. Facial masks are either
applied directly to the skin or over a layer of gauze.
Masks should always be applied to clean skin. If a facial is
desired, the facial manipulations are usually given before
the mask is applied.
Types of Facial Masks
·
Clay packs are usually recommended for normal or oily skin types.
·
Cream masks are recommended for normal to dry skin.
·
"Siccative" masks are drying masks. Most are made from a mineral powder base, such as
clay, sand, zinc oxide or mud. This type of product is excellent when used on oily skin, as it
will draw out oil and impurities from the pores. It is also good for acne-prone skin.
·
Paraffin (warm wax) is heated and applied to the skin to rehydrate (moisturize) the skin's
top layers. By coating the skin with warmth and blocking the skin's natural tendency to
"breathe," the heat of a warm wax mask acts to draw oil and perspiration to the top layer
of the skin. This mask is especially good for dry, wrinkled or dehydrated skin. It should be
applied over a layer of gauze.
The Benefits of Facial Masks Include:
1. Increasing the firmness of the skin for a temporary period of time
2. Increasing the circulation of the blood in the areas treated
3. Absorbing and removing unwanted surface oil
4. Removing surface dirt
5. Absorbing and removing skin impurities
6. Softening and smoothing the skin
7. Relaxing and refreshing the client
Skin Care Essentials
As a cosmetologist, you will recommend the skin care treatments and products you will use during
the service, as well as the products your client will take home. The following charts identify the prod-
ucts, implements and equipment you will use during a salon facial. Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for all products used in the salon must be available.
