SKIN CARE
In our culture, everyone recognizes the esthetic and hygienic reasons for caring for the skin. Proper
skin care is a combination of concerted efforts toward a good home-maintenance program,
a well-balanced diet, proper intake of water, limited exposure to the sun, exercise, rest and
professional skin care treatments and products.
Keeping skin in good condition requires a minimum of three steps:
1. Cleanse thoroughly with a product that does not rob or strip the skin of its natural
conditioners.
2. Tone the skin with an astringent or freshener.
3. Moisturize the skin to make up for the unavoidable losses it sustains from aging and
exposure to the environment.
The skin should be cleansed daily with an appropriate skin-cleaning product. Ordinary soaps are
not recommended for cleaning since they are generally alkaline and can strip the skin of its protec-
tive acid mantle.
Using astringents, toners or refreshers (sometimes called tonic lotions or skin refin-
ers) helps to further cleanse the skin while bringing it to a normal pH.
The final step is moisturizing, which helps to keep the skin smooth. Moisturizers in
a product operate in several ways. Some products, called humectants, attract mois-
ture. Other products create a barrier that helps keep moisture in.
It is important to remember that oily skin needs moisturizing (hydrating) as much as
dry skin. Excessive oil in skin does not replace loss of moisture. In fact, proper mois-
turizing can actually reduce the oily appearance because it contributes to a better bal-
ance of oil and moisture in the skin.

SALON FUNDAMENTALS
"You are familiar with
a dehydrated grape.
It's a raisin! Dehydra-
tion of human skin has
the same effect. It
shrivels and toughens
the skin's outer layer."
