AURORA - A few years ago, Barbara Tuck-
er tried to implement a Finger Lakes and Lake
George option for Advanced Travel, her Mans-
field, Ohio, tour company.
It didn't sell.
Now Tucker plans to give it another go-
round, this time with one very important advan-
tage: she's visited the central and upstate New York
regions she'll be promoting.
"(Tours) sell better if you've been to the
area," said Tucker, 61, one of 32 participants in
Big Grape II, a three-day Finger Lakes familiar-
ization tour sponsored by the Cayuga County
Office of Tourism and other local partners. "I
can talk about the area. I can have enthusiasm for
the area."
Tucker and Martha Walters, one of her tour
conductors, drove nine hours from the Midwest
to attend Big Grape, which started Wednesday
and ends today. From a cruise on Skaneateles
Lake to dinner at the Sherwood Inn, the tour is
designed to attract operators who will ensure
overnight visitors to Cayuga County and nearby
locales.
Thursday morning's first stop was MacKen-
zie-Childs, in Aurora.
As they tour the ceramics and furniture in the
farmhouse, visitors are required to wear small
blue booties over their footwear. But Tucker sim-
ply elected to remove her shoes.
"You can take the girl out of the hills, but
you can't take the hills out of the girl," joked
Tucker, who still has a hint of an accent from
her Tennessee childhood.
Walking through the rooms, her pale pur-
ple Big Grape shirt blending in with the others,
Tucker marveled at the eclectic items before her.
She didn't know about MacKenzie-Childs before,
she said, and now will consider introducing it
on her motorcoach tours.
After experiencing Aurora and Skaneateles,
Tucker strongly believes that she can make a
new, tweaked tour of central and Upstate New York
work.
If her personal history offers any clues, she has
the personal determination to do it.
Six weeks after she started Advanced Trav-
el five years ago, her 24-year-old son died of
epilepsy. At that time, Tucker appreciated her new
business more than ever.
"I was able to go out with the people (on
tours), and a lot of them didn't know and didn't
treat me any differently," said Tucker, a widow.
"I developed a love for working with people."
She also made it through a downturn in trav-
el post-9/11.
Most of Tucker's clients are upper-middle
class, a good fit, she thinks, for touring the Fin-
ger Lakes region. She noted Skaneateles' scenic
beauty and the upscale shops.
With a bottle of King Ferry Winery's semi-
dry Riesling in hand (yes, the group started tast-
ing at 10 a.m.), she prepared to board the bus, ready
for the next winery and lunch at the Aurora Inn.
She plans to stay a few extra nights in the
area and will likely head to Cooperstown and
Watkins Glen to see if those might be good addi-
tions for her new tour.
"I love to show people America because there
is so much to see in our country," Tucker said, not-
ing that she wants people to realize there is more
to New York state than New York City. "Most peo-
ple don't even realize what there is to see here."
