1. Swirl the glass of wine
rapidly. This will release the
wine's chemicals into the air.
2. Stop swirling and insert
your nose into the glass. Inhale
with quick, full sniffs. Deter-
mine any odors or grape aroma.
Decide what the smell reminds
you of. Try to detect presence
of fruits, florals or spices like
pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, tea
or nuts. Also look out for other
aromas like cedar, oak, choco-
late, mushrooms, red meat,
asparagus, herbs or hay.
3. Sip a small amount, and
move it over your tongue so
that all of your taste buds touch
it.
4. Note how long the fla-
vors stay in your mouth after
you've swallowed. Decide how
noticeable the alcohol is. The
wine should have a balanced
taste so you're unaware of the
alcohol's presence.
