Auburn Citizen - falltrav
make maneuvering easier by helping you maintain
your balance in mixed terrain.
Know before you go...
Weather and snow conditions in central New York
can change in a blink of an eye with the inconsistent
bands of lake effect snow coming off of Lake Ontario.
Make sure to check the local weather conditions
before heading out and tell someone where you are
going and what time you're expected back.
Make sure your equipment is in good shape before
you head out. If you are not in that good of shape, you
should gradually work your way up before heading out
on a long trek.
During this time of year, you must constantly
beware of hypothermia. This condition can even hin-
der the judgement of veterans so keep your head,
hands, and feet protected from heat loss.
Remember to stay hydrated. Even though it's cold
outside, you can still lose body heat and water.
Be sure to carry a bottle of water and some energy
gars along on your trip. Eating snow during the winter
is not the answer because it will lower your core body
temperature and it requires more body energy to make
snow a liquid.
Check a map to familiarize the trail or trails you will
be on and some are very tough to follow when they are
covered with deep snow. Stay in known areas and if
you're not sure how safe an area is don't go.
Tread lightly. The only things you need to leave
behind in the great outdoors are your footprints.
Proper winter apparel is essential...
Layering your clothing is the best way to stay dry
and warm while snowshoeing or during any wintering
outing. Start with lightweight, breathable layers
underneath, and avoid materials such as cotton. This
works not only for shirts and pants but also for your
head, hands and feet as well.
The first layers needs to be a wicking layer followed
up with a second layer of wool or fleece insulation. The
outside layer needs to be a waterproof/windproof shell
such as a breathing type of rain jacket.
The most body heat is lost through the head, hands
and feet. Be sure to wear a warm hat, gloves and socks.
Use a boot that is waterproof, comfortable and sup-
portive. Late winter with heavy snowpack is a great
time to use gaiters in the deep powder.
The great thing about snowshoeing is that it
requires no fee, really no special equipment or no
learning curve, unlike other winter sports. It's just you,
the snow, the wildlife and the quiet solitude of being in
the great outdoors in central New York.
