THE RIGHT HONOURABLE BRIAN MULRONEY served as
Canada's 18th Prime Minister for almost nine years
between 1984 and 1993. The major achievements of his
government include the Canadian-U.S. Free Trade
Agreement, NAFTA, tax reform, deregulation, privatization
and reduction in government spending.
Recently, Mr. Mulroney was named the Greenest
Prime Minister by Corporate Knights, a magazine which
focuses on corporate responsibility. During his time
in office, Mr. Mulroney finalized the Canada-U.S. Acid Rain
Treaty as well as established a $3-billion Green Plan,
which funded environmental research.
Mr. Mulroney was among the first of the world leaders
to broach the subject of climate change, an emerging
concern at the time. In 1992, his government promised to
stabilize greenhouse gas levels, starting a trend which ultimately led to Canada's involvement in
the Kyoto Accord. Mr. Mulroney also helped to spearhead the Montreal Protocol to protect the
ozone layer, an agreement still seen as the greatest international effort for the environment.
Mr. Mulroney was born in Baie Comeau, Quebec on March 20, 1939, is married to Mila,
and is father to four children: Caroline, Benedict, Mark and Nicolas.
Located at Sunnyside Beach, Toronto, the Palais Royale is a classic
ballroom which first opened in 1922. It reached its peak in
popularity in the 1930s when many of the big band and swing
greats played at the location, including Duke Ellington, Count
Basie, Benny Goodman and others.
Its popularity lasted well into the 1950s until the demolishment
of Sunnyside Park orphaned the building. In 2006, the Palais
Royale reopened after a $3.5 million renovation that kept the
grandeur of the past, and also revitalized the location with modern
touches. Today the Palais Royale is once again hosting private
functions and public dance events.
