Procedure
Measured volumes of shellfish homogenate dilutions are added to a series of tubes containing a liquid differential
medium. Following incubation the tubes showing characteristic changes produced by a positive reaction (acid
production from lactose) are subcultured to a medium containing 5-bromo-4-chloro-3indolyl--D-glucuronide (BCIG)
and incubated at 44°C to confirm their identity as E. coli. The most probable number (MPN) of E. coli per 100 gram of
the shellfish sample is determined by the number of positive tubes at each dilution level, and referenced to probability
tables. The method available at Integrin is suitable for all common edible shellfish species. Shellfish will be shucked
where necessary, in accordance with accepted best practice. The above tests are UKAS accredited; see our Scope of
Accreditation for details. Integrin does not guarantee that untested shellfish from the same batches as those tested are
fit for human consumption.
Sample Turnaround and Pricing
Integrin aims to provide rapid turnaround of samples received for shellfish testing, as the MPN test requires 3 days this
is the minimum turnaround time, please allow up to 5 working days for reporting of results. Results are reported by
telephone, fax or e-mail as soon as they are available.
