about the 16th
annual contessas
The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards
Who can enter?
The competition is open to every bonafide, working
member of a Canadian professional beauty salon,
including freelancers to the industry and salon owners.
What is the Community Service Award?
In addition to the 21 regular categories, a community service
award is given to the professional or salon whose single
event created the greatest impact in their neighbourhood
between September 1, 2003 and August 17, 2004.
There is no entry fee for this category, which is judged
by an independent Community Service Award panel, but
contestants must fill out a separate "Contessa Community
Service Award Application." For information call
416-869-3131. One applicant will be awarded a Community
Service certificate during the Contessa Awards gala.
How are the entries judged?
Judging is performed over two days by four different
panels of independent professional beauty industry experts,
and beauty editors. Shown by number and category only,
each entrant's work remains anonymous to both judging
panels. Judges score each entry on a point system relating
to originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability,
technical execution, photography, makeup, wardrobe
and overall concept. Scrutineers will review entries to
ensure individual compliance with the existing Rules and
Regulations of the Contessas. The spirit and intent of this
competition is to showcase the work of hairstylists, artists
and technicians. As such, major photographic or digital
manipulation is discouraged. Based on the judging panel's
opinion, submissions that appear to have extreme digital
manipulation will be demerited.
Where can photographers be found?
For a cross-Canada list of photographers, familiar with
the requirements of The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year
Awards, call 416-869-3131; fax 416-869-3008; or visit
the Salon Magazine booth at ABA shows across Canada.
How are semi-finalists and
finalists notified?

finalists in the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Salon
Team of the Year and Elite Master Hairstylist of the
Year categories are listed in the October issues of Salon
Magazine English and French, and are also notified by mail.

in the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Salon Team of the
