the canadian hairstylist
of the year awards
Who can enter?
The competition is open to every bonafide, working member
of a Canadian professional beauty salon, including
freelancers to the industry and salon owners.
What is the Community Service Award?
In addition to the 21 regular categories, a community
service award is given to the professional or salon
whose single event created the greatest impact in their
neighbourhood between September 1, 2002 and August 19,
2003. There is no entry fee for this category, which is
judged by an independent Community Service Award panel,
but contestants must fill out a separate "Contessa
Community Service Award Application." For information
call 416-869-3131 (ext. 105). One applicant will be
awarded a Community Service certificate during the
Contessa Awards gala.
How are the entries judged?
Judging is performed over two days by two different panels
of independent beauty industry experts, beauty editors and
photographers. Shown by number and category only, each
entrant's work remains anonymous to both judging panels.
Judges score each entry on a point system relating to
originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability,
technical execution, photography, makeup, wardrobe and
overall concept.
Where can photographers be found?
For a cross-Canada list of photographers, familiar with the
requirements of The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards,
call 416-869-3131 (ext. 105); fax 416-869-3008; or visit
the
Salon Magazine booth at ABA shows across Canada.
How are semi-finalists and
finalists notified?
The 10 semi-finalists from each category and 20 semi-
finalists in the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Salon Team
of the Year and Canadian Master Hairstylist of the Year
categories are listed in the October issues of
Salon Magazine
English & French, and are also notified by mail. The five
finalists from each category and top 10 finalists in the
Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Salon Team of the Year
and Canadian Master Hairstylist of the Year categories are
listed in the November/December issues of both publications,
and are notified by phone and mail. Winners will be
announced at the awards gala.

contessa
entry tips:
DO submit a complete entry package for each category.
This includes: an official entry form (with every line filled
out--legibly), the required photographs AND a slide
of yourself. Typed or attached word-processed documents
are highly encouraged.
DON'T submit one form for multiple categories. If you're
entering more than one category, photocopy the sheet,
ask for extra forms or visit www.beautynet.com/contessa.
DO submit full credits, including your name, category
entered, photographer, makeup artist, etc. on a separate
sheet. Staple it to your entry form.
DON'T attach sticky labels to the slides. Labels have to
be removed before slides are loaded into the projector which
means credits get lost. Legibly print your name and category
entered on directly on slides.
DON'T mount your slides in glass as they generally shatter
en route. Stick to plastic please.
DO submit slides in protective plastic sleeves to protect
slides from getting scratched or lost. Staple the plastic sleeve
to your entry form, being careful not to staple through your
slides. Please do not tape slides to your entry form!
DO enclose your entry fee (payable by Visa, American
Express or cheque--cash only if submitting your entry
in person) in your package to ensure efficient processing
of your entry. Entries paid with NSF cheques or unauthorized
credit cards will be disqualified.
DO make duplicate copies of your work prior to submission.
Once entered, original slides become Contessa property.
Salon Magazine English and French use them all year long
in the magazines.
DO read the rules and regulations carefully and make
a checklist of what's required for each submission. This is
very important! If you have a question, call 416-869-3131
(ext.105).
DO enter. If you don't enter, you can't win!
