ISES Corporation - Case Study
University of Michigan
Mr. Richard Robben
Director, Maintenance Services & Utilities
(734) 763-5075
1998 Present
ISES Corporation was contracted by the University of Michigan to conduct a comprehensive facilities
condition analysis. The total scope of this effort will include all university facilities with over 30 million square
feet. This project is being accomplished in phases. The first phase, which was the School of Engineering,
was completed in May of 1998. Additional
phases include all Educational and General
Fund buildings, the Medical School, and
Housing. Future phases will include athletic
facilities, the University Hospital, and all
associated university infrastructure systems.
As an example of successful partnering
between ISES and institutions of higher
education, the University of Michigan has
chosen ISES to be its sole provider of
comprehensive facilities renewal inspection
and management services. The baseline
effort for all general fund facilities at the
university is scheduled to be complete
during the 1999-2000 fiscal year. Starting
with the 2000-2001 fiscal year, ISES
personnel will reinspect twenty percent of
the campus annually. The database will be updated annually to reflect changing conditions and work that
has been accomplished.
The University of Michigan facilities department is rapidly becoming
one of the largest user groups in the history of ISES. Over 100 users
actively access the data on completed facilities as part of the normal
routine. All planned projects are cross-checked against the ISES
database before commencement of work. Also, the level of
interaction between university
staff (at all levels) and ISES
personnel is unparalleled. All
levels of the chain of command
at the University of Michigan are
committed to working closely
with ISES to ensure that the data
which results from the process is
a complete, comprehensive tool
which will be of continuing
benefit to the university.
