ISES Corporation Class Env Page 2
ISES Corporation continues to expand on the evaluation of the classroom
environment and provide detail and in-depth studies of existing conditions. Two
important tools are utilized to measure current lighting and acoustic conditions in
a classroom. One is the Audio Toolbox by Terra Sonde for measuring acoustics.
The other is the Luminance Meter LS100 manufactured by Minolta, utilized for
measuring luminance measurements of light sources or reflective surfaces.
ACOUSTICS
The Audio Toolbox, manufactured by Terra Sonde, is utilized to evaluate current
acoustical conditions in the room. The acoustical measurements taken from
classrooms are the Noise Criteria (NC) and the Reverberation Time (RT60).
Although there are many elements of sound that can be tested in a room, these
two elements have been determined to be the most critical in a classroom
environment. The Audio Toolbox was manufactured and calibrated to meet ANSI
criteria for measuring acoustics. Signals are generated for measuring the RT60
and are amplified to approximately 90 db for a period of 10 seconds. The RT60
is generated and is recorded for evaluation.
LIGHTING
Lighting has been identified as a critical design element in the classroom
environment. Recent technological advances and methods of teaching in a
classroom environment have required us to change various aspects of our
lighting requirements. Defining the quality of light and how to correct lighting
deficiencies can be challenging. The measurement of light quality is a complex
process. However, the current testing procedures utilized provide data to
determine if existing classrooms, lecture halls, and auditoriums are currently
meeting the recommended lighting standards that are suggested by the
Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and conforming to ANSI.
SYNOPSIS
Existing data of investigated classroom conditions throughout the country
indicated that less than five percent meet criteria set by current Acoustical
Standards, ADA, Illuminating Engineering of North America, and current building
codes.
ISES Corporation has added "Smart Classroom" inspections to its broad range of
facilities inspection services. By identifying and quantifying classroom
deficiencies, universities can begin to plan for better classrooms and better
education.
