From December 5 to 7, the European film community gathered in Berlin
for the presentation of the sixteenth European Film Awards. Many of
the Academy's 1,600 members came to the German capital for a weekend
of lively discussions, to meet old friends and make new acquaintances, and
to celebrate European cinema.
There were also some new faces and we would like to introduce
you to some of them since the exchange between young film
students and established filmmakers was part of what made
the weekend so special. Attila, Elena, Juliette, Sergi and Reynir
made filmed postcards from their countries to be shown
during the ceremony. Nick, Markus and Oleg never tired of
shooting another clip here, discussing yet another new idea
there and, generally, they became
EFA
's "junior allies" for the
Awards 2003. Students from thirty European film schools and
their teachers had come to Berlin to participate in the
EFA
Con-
ference

On Saturday morning,
they met with EFA members, journalists, film students from
Berlin and others to discuss how film education can convey
what makes the very heart of a film: its content.
Highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the Euro-
pean Film Awards on Saturday evening at the Arena, a former
bus depot in Berlin-Treptow. A new concept, developed with
the support of Wim Wenders (President of the European Film
Academy), Jeanne Moreau and Heino Ferch (
MC
), emphasised
the one thing which united all 1,200 guests this evening: a
passion for film.
It was a great weekend and a successful ceremony and we
are extremely happy about it. The European Film Academy can
only achieve as much as its members are willing to give. The
Awards Weekend showed how lively European cinema is:
directors, scriptwriters and producers passionately discussing
with film students, young filmmakers meeting the great idols
of European cinema at breakfast, discussing their upcoming
projects together and at the end everybody sitting and cele-
brating together at the Awards Ceremony.
All that is only possible with the help and support of many
partners and friends. An evening dedicated to European film
can only work out if all those who love European cinema partici-
pate in it. And in Berlin you could experience just that. There
is still a lot to do, but it feels like we're on the right path.
Thank you very much!
