30. The primary reason that the police try to
determine the make, model, and year of the
car involved in the commission of a crime is
to
(A) compare the tire tracks left at the scene
of the crime with the type of tires used
on cars of that make.
(B) determine whether the mud on the tires
of the suspected car matches the mud in
the unpaved road near the scene of the
crime.
(C) reduce, to a large extent, the amount of
work involved in determining the
particular car used in the commission of
a crime.
(D) alert the police forces to question the
occupants of all automobiles of this
type.
Questions 31 through 33 are to be answered
solely on the basis of the following information.
While questioning people taken into custody,
it is essential that police officers give them as
much information as possible concerning the
crime for which they have been arrested. To
accomplish this and at the same time gain the
cooperation of the people taken into custody,
the following procedure should be used:
1.
Be sympathetic.
2.
Lighten the person's fear of the punishment he
or she faces.
3.
Convince the person that his or her family will
understand if he or she confesses to the crime.
4.
Attempt to convince the person that, if he or
she wishes to confess, he or she is not squeal-
ing on partners in the crime; if they were
caught, they would squeal.
5.
If the person in custody seems reluctant to
admit guilt, point out the fact that the police
possess enough evidence for a conviction with-
out a confession.
31. Two police officers, responding to a call that
a liquor store is being robbed, are able to
capture and arrest a suspect. Two other men
who participated in the robbery get away.
The arrested man indicates that he would be
willing to give the officers the names of the
other two men, but if he did, he would be
considered an informer. It would be appro-
priate at this point for the officers to tell the
man they have in custody that
(A) his partners would have told on him if
they had been caught.
(B) the facts point to the guilt of his
partners.
(C) he will receive a longer jail term if he
does not tell them the names of his
partners.
(D) his partners will not hold it against him
if he reveals their names.
32. Police Officer Jane Paxton has just taken a
man into custody for the commission of a
minor crime. During questioning, the man
remains silent, finally telling Officer Paxton
that he is very much ashamed and he fears
what his family will think when they
discover his predicament. He states that, if
he confesses to the crime, his family will
never forgive him. Officer Paxton should
tell the man that
(A) he should immediately confess before
everyone finds out how stupid he is for
committing the crime.
(B) his family is likely to forgive him if he
confesses to the crime.
(C) his family will not forgive him
anyway, so he should confess to the
crime.
(D) if he does not confess at once, she will
personally tell his family.
