· a new classroom building that also houses various special-purpose areas including the library, a
language laboratory, an interviewing-techniques complex, and various criminalistic teaching labora-
tories for rolling and lifting fingerprints and testing narcotics
· a new 96-point indoor firing range that provides eight separate ranges of 12 firing points each,
classrooms, and weapons-cleaning areas
· a new driver-training complex that provides the ability to create more realistic situations for training
in defensive driving, skid control, and highway driving
· additional physical specialties facilities
· an addition to the dining hall
(You will note that there are no facilities for dependents. Students are urged to leave their families at
home during the training period. Transportation of dependents must be at the student's own expense.
Housing in Brunswick, Georgia, is limited, and the program is so intensive that little visiting time
remains.)
The training staff of the Center is made up of experienced instructors who have a minimum of five years
of law enforcement experience. A portion of the instructors are federal officers and investigators on
detailed assignment to the Center from their parent agencies. This mix of permanent and detailed
instructors creates a balance of experience and fresh insight from the field.
The schoolday at FLETC is divided into classroom time, laboratories, and practical exercises. Part of
the FLETC staff consists of professional role players who are able to give students very real training and
experience in interviewing, pursuit, judgment in the use of firearms, and many other police techniques.
Each program at FLETC is geared to the specific needs of a specific type of law enforcement officer
and to a specific agency. Nonetheless, the Criminal Investigator Training Program may be taken as
typical. The Criminal Investigator Training Program consists of 38 training days. There are a total of 300
course hours in the program covered in eight weeks of training. The program begins on a Tuesday and
ends on a Thursday to allow for travel time. All agencies pay for travel between the first duty station and
Glynco, Georgia.
Here is the complete course of instruction for the Criminal Investigator Training Program.
