education magazine (Change, July/August 98). Colleges and univer-
sities, he argued, must better explain what college is really about. They
must develop new and more meaningful ways to measure quality and
share this information with students and parents.
College Rankings Exposed fills this gap. It provides the information
families need to make a genuinely informed college choice. Instead of
numbers, it offers a behind-the-scenes understanding of what college is
all about and what all students deserve to get out of their college educa-
tion. Of special importance, it also provides specific questions prospective
students can ask when evaluating colleges so that, in the end, they can
find a college that is not only "good," but--of equal importance--the
right fit.
What makes a good college? Insights from college presidents and deans
interviewed for College Rankings Exposed paint a far richer and more excit-
ing portrait of college life than any ranking can accurately measure. A good
college is a place where students work closely with faculty, where they have
opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom. It's a place
where strong liberal arts courses are at the heart of the curriculum. It's a
place where students earn not only a credential but also the skills they really
need to succeed in their chosen careers. It's also a place where they gain
confidence and are challenged and tested in unexpected ways.
Of special importance, College Rankings Exposed argues that this kind
of experience can be found across the country and in hundreds of col-
leges and universities. Higher education is one of our nation's greatest
strengths. In this country, there is no one "best" college, but many good
colleges offering diverse climates for learning. Students do themselves a
tremendous disservice when they reject this menu of options. College
Rankings Exposed opens doors of opportunity into this wider world of
education and helps students pick what is, in the end, the best college for
them.
