New findings from 180 veterinary practices demonstrate:
Hygiene and animal health products against piglet coccidio-
sis

Leverkusen / Hanover The parasites that cause piglet coccidiosis are pre-
sent in about 76 percent of all holdings. That is the result of a survey of 180
German veterinary practices conducted by Bayer Vital GmbH in Germany.
Eighteen months after launching its new anticoccidial for pigs, the manufac-
turer of this innovative veterinary drug product pointed out in a press meeting
at the Eurotier exhibition in Hanover that Isospora suis, the parasite that
causes diarrhea, is widely underestimated and hard to identify without a vet-
erinary diagnosis.
"The recent survey shows that hygiene standards are generally better in large
than in small farm holdings," explained Andreas Cohnen, Product Manager
(Livestock) at Bayer Vital GmbH, the German marketing subsidiary of Bayer
HealthCare AG. However, almost all farms have problems with diarrhea in
young piglets aged between two and three weeks, he added. The type of floor-
ing used in the piggery is a key factor. Bayer Vital analyzed more than 1,700
samples in total and continues to support farmers and veterinary surgeons with
a diagnostic kit to help recognize the infection in the herd.
"Sanitary measures are an important tool in the long-term control of piglet
coccidiosis," noted Cohnen. Effective hygiene management including cleaning
and disinfection is indispensable. However, the use of a powerful animal
