Do you recognize your students in this film?
What issues and challenges do these students face in trying to adapt to American society?
Which of those challenges are created by American culture and which derive from the student's
native culture?
The following segments show a classroom situation or a student interacting with a teacher or
counselor. If this is a half-day workshop, participants can view and discuss all of them. If the
workshop is 2 hours long or less, show as many as time will allow.
B. (8 minutes, total)
Segment: 10:00 12:00 - Tureya in gym class and with gym teacher (running time, 2 min.)
Discussion
What are your initial reactions to the segment?
How would you describe the teacher's actions and behavior with Tureya?
What could he have done differently?
Should Tureya have been in a co-ed gym class? How could this have been arranged
differently?

Segment: 28:35 29:44 - Mariam with counselor, talking about problems with her adopted
mother (running time, approx. 1 min.)

How would you describe the interaction between Mariam and the counselor?
Do you think the counselor handles Mariam's issues appropriately?
How do you gain a student's trust, and how do you get in touch with what's going on in their
lives outside of school?
Should the counselor refer Mariam to another agency for further help with her problems?
