Suzuki Music Annual
Report
2005 10
to age four before being able to
participate in concert items - there is a
limited number of students able to perform
at major events. For this reason it was
decided to perform in the Grand Annual
Concert in alternating years. We look
forward to performing a Suzuki Voice item
again in 2006.

SUZUKI VOICE

During the last year the Violin/Viola
Committee has grown in size to include
teachers new to the role, as well as
welcoming back more experienced hands.
We are constantly seeking out ways to
include and develop the skills of our
membership within the Suzuki philosophy,
and make connections between teachers.
One such endeavour has inaugurated
Teacher Social Play-ins for violin teachers,
an informal gathering which continues
once a term or thereabouts.
Students and families have been extended
by the skills and warmth of our tutors at
workshops, notably once again Mrs Suzuki,
as well as Haruo and Yasuki. We have been
fortunate to be able to include such other
teachers as Alison McAlpine, Masaki
Nakamura and Barbara Hayward in our
programs.
The violin students set their sights ever
higher, where once book 10 was a
destination now it has become merely one
stop on a longer journey. This is having an
invigorating effect on the other students
(and teachers!), as well as inspiring players
of other instruments, such as viola.
Viola enrolments are growing slowly, with
consistent attendance at workshops and
concerts, and good playing in evidence.
At Orchestra Camp the advanced students
and teachers joined together for many
hours of impromptu music-making with
standard chamber repertoire, which for
many was the highlight of the camp. Once
again Margaret Hoban joined us as guest
conductor for a weekend of great music
and camaraderie.
The excitement of the Orchestra Program
was showcased to all those who attended
the Grand Annual Concert, resulting in a
significant increase in orchestra enrolments
for 2006.
The Matsumoto Marathon was run again in
2005 giving new or inexperienced teachers
a chance to take a book 1-2 violin group
class for a short time, with the option of
professional feedback. Many students
enjoyed the challenges set them by their
varied teachers, and had fun playing
together.
