SEARCHING

To view a list of the Major Concepts controlled
terms, including related terms and scope notes,
click the "Major Concepts" icon at the top of
the screen.
s
Use the Boolean operators AND, OR, or NOT to
broaden or narrow the search.
s
Click Search Tips for examples of a Basic Search.
s
Limit the search by typing a specific publication
in the "Magazine" box and selecting options from
the "Date Published" drop-down menus.
s
Limit a search to specific fields using field codes.
· Click field codes for complete instructions.
· Click hyperlinked database names for a full list
of available field codes.
s
Expand the search by clicking the "also search
for related words" box.
s
Click the "Search" button.
s
Refine as needed.
· To refine a search, click on "Refine Search"
from the "Results List" screen.
· Other options include "Print", "Email", or "Save".
· The "Search Web Links" allows access to
additional information related to the search topics.
· Click the [Tips] link to access the Full Record
Search Tip.
Results will be ranked in descending date order,
with the most recent article displayed first.
Guided Search
The Guided Search option offers more control over a
search with the ability to search four fields
simultaneously using Boolean operators. For further

Type search terms into the "Find" box, enclosing
exact phrases in quotes.
s
Use the drop-down box of indexes to select a
field code in which to find the search term
(a field is a searchable file of terms).
s
Use the Boolean operators AND, OR, or NOT and
type additional search terms in the second, third,
and fourth boxes. Select the field codes for each term.
s
Limit the search by typing a specific publication
in the "Magazine" box and selecting options from
the "Date Published" drop-down menus.

To "Expand Your Search," click the "also search
for related words" box.

To further pinpoint your search, use one or more
the "Special Limiters for Biological Abstracts"
selections:
