The Subject Index
The Subject Index allows you to locate references by specific terms which were used
in the author's title or Subject Terms added by BIOSIS. Subject Terms are added by
BIOSIS to enhance or clarify the title and may include organisms, drug modifiers,
drug actions and interactions, methods, and new research areas discussed in the
original article.
Within the Subject Index, keywords are arranged alphabetically and placed in context
by the Context Terms which appear to the left and right of the keyword. The Context
Terms are taken from the original reference's Title or Subject Terms. The correspond-
ing reference number appears to the right of each entry.
The following excerpt from the Subject Index shows how one paper, reference number
205, can be located by a number of keywords within the Subject Index. The slash (/)
separates terms which were found in the title from those that were found in the Subject
Terms.
Conventions:
s
Words with limited search value are not listed under keywords, but may be found in
the Subject Context column.
s
Latin names of organisms are not found in the keyword column, but may appear
under Subject Context. If you have a scientific organism name (and are using product
prior to 1998), check the Generic Index.
s
Numerical tems such as chemical names, drug codes, and cell lines appear after "Z."
s
Only BIOSIS-selected abbreviations for terms are used [e.g., ATP (Adenosine triphos-
phate)]. See the BIOSIS Abbreviation List which appears at the beginning of the
Subject Index in each issue.
s
Words whose significance is improved by pairing (e.g., GUINEA-PIG, CARBON-14)
are kept as single keywords.
