The Generic Index
The Generic Index is created from genus and species names and includes living or
fossil genera, species, subspecies, varieties, and forms. The organisms are matched
with abbreviated Major Concepts, which indicate the broad subject area of the original
document. A complete list of these abbreviations can be found on the first page of the
Generic Index in the first issue of each volume of both BA and BA/RRM.

Abbreviations which may appear beside an organism name are used to identify taxo-
nomic subcategories and/or the number of organisms. A question mark following a
name in the Generic Index indicates uncertain identification. Reference number tags
are used when an item refers to new taxa or gives specific taxonomic information. A
complete list of abbreviations and tags appears on the first page of the Generic Index.
