Searching the Indexes
For customers searching back issues of BA and BA/RRM, this section is included to
allow you to understand how to search publications prior to 1998. Prior to 1998, the
information currently included in the Organism Index was contained in the Biosystem-
atic Index and Generic Index. Modifications needed for the Author Index are mentioned
in history notes in the section titled "The Author Index." Finally, directions on searching
the Subject Index prior to 1998 follow the Biosystematic and Generic Index sections below.
The Biosystematic Index
The Biosystematic Index lists organisms by broad taxonomic categories higher than the
genus level. Within each taxonomic category, items are arranged according to the pri-
mary Major Concept, allowing you to match groups of organisms with subject areas. An
asterisk indicates that a new taxonomic group is described. The following is an excerpt
from the Biosystematic Index:
Conventions:
s
The Biosystematic Index is arranged hierarchically from broad to narrow groupings
according to the taxonomic classification shown in the Major Taxonomic Classifica-
tions (Appendix B). Within each category, entries are arranged from general to specific
according to their corresponding taxonomic hierarchies (e.g., Serpentes would appear
below its higher taxonomic category, Reptilia).
s
Within each taxonomic grouping, the Major Concepts (e.g., Toxicology, General) are
arranged alphabetically and the reference numbers are displayed from left to right in
numeric sequence. An asterisk (*) adjacent to a Reference Number indicates that a
new taxonomic group is described within the body of the original source document.
s
Whenever there is an accepted difference in taxonomic classification, BIOSIS indexes
the organism under all possible taxonomic categories. For example, flagellate algae
are indexed under both Algae and Protozoa.
s
All references to fossils and other paleontological subjects are listed under Paleobiolo-
gy, Paleobotany, or Paleozoology, as well as the appropriate taxonomic category.
