·Genus Species
To find references on a genus species of primate, such as a chimpanzee:
Look in the organism index under the genus species name (Pan troglodytes) or under
the higher taxonomic name (Primates or Pongidae). If you are unsure of the scientific
name, or its higher taxonomic level, you can locate the common name of the animal
in the Subject Index. Incidentally, the scientific name of an organism is also located in
the Subject Index.
Remember to note relevant reference numbers so you can find the main entry.
NOTE: If you do not know the scientific name for an organism, use the Subject Index
first and next to the common name will be the higher taxonomic category used in the
Organism Index.
Finding references to single terms
· Find studies on Coleopteran development
Use the Organism Index to retrieve reference numbers whose Major Concept head-
ings best correspond to your topic.
· Enterocytozoon bieneusi
is a frequent cause of chronic diarrhea in patients with HIV infection. Find informa-
tion about the drug, sparfloxacin, used to treat intestinal microsporidiosis due to
Enterocytozoon bieneusi.
For this type of question, select the appropriate indexes, and compare reference num-
bers. It is helpful to search the most limiting topic first. The most limiting topic is the
one which will most likely have the fewest number of references.
1. Sparfloxacin
Use the Subject Index. Note relevant drug modifiers (e.g., antiparasitic-drug), Major
Concepts, and keywords and mark down the reference numbers. A sample from the
Subject Index follows.
