The indexes in BA and BA/RRM allow you to locate references by several access points.
BA and BA/RRM contain three of the same indexes--Author, Organism, and Subject.
In addition, BA/RRM contains a fourth index, the Sponsor Index, at the beginning of
the Meetings section. The following sections offer descriptions of each of the indexes
and illustrate how to use them to locate relevant information. Prior to 1998, "Organ-
isms" were accessed through the Biosystematic and Generic Indexes. See the section
titled for searching the indexes prior to 1998, page 27, for further information.
The Author Index
The Author Index is an alphabetical list of all contributing authors and coauthors,
inventors, and editors for references within an issue. The names of the authors/inven-
tors/editors are arranged alphabetically by the surname with a separate entry for each
author or coauthor, inventor, or editor. The Reference Number is listed immediately
to the right of individual entries. When no personal author names are provided, a
corporate name with a geographic designation is used.
The following is a sample excerpt from the Author Index:
Conventions
s
All contributing authors from a record can be found in the Author Index.
s
Personal Names:
·
Family names are followed by full first names (when available) or initials.
·
Prefixes such as De, La, Van, and Von are followed by a space if listed as such in
the original publication (e.g., De Ville).
·
Family names with O', M', Mc, or Mac have no space (e.g., McKinley).
·
Family hierarchy (Jr., Sr., I, II) follow the initials (Simpson John Sr.).
·
Hyphens and spaces are retained as in the original (Smith-Jones).
·
Titles are omitted unless a personal name is not given in the original source (e.g.,
Lord Mountbatten).
Prior to 1998, family names were followed only by initials of first names and
not full first names.
