oth BA and BA/RRM contain comprehensive indexes that allow you to locate
references by several access points, including author name, subject, and organism. Both
publications also allow for easy scanning or browsing of references for a quick overview
of subject area.
Scanning
BA
To scan BA, turn to the list of Major Concepts at the beginning of the Abstracts section
titled, "Major Concept Headings for Abstracts". Locate the Major Concept which corre-
sponds to your area of interest and note the page number where that section begins.
Turn to the appropriate page and scan the abstracts under the relevant Major Concept.
To be more comprehensive, note other areas of interest listed in the "see also" para-
graph below the Major Concept heading.
Major Concepts for 1998 forward have been revised to reflect current research
in the life sciences. Prior to 1998, for BA, please refer to the beginning of the
Abstracts section for an alphabetical list of Major Concept Headings. Refer to
the beginning of the Generic Index for a full list of Major Concepts used in the
Generic Index. For BA/RRM, prior to 1998, please refer to the beginning of the
Content Summaries section and the beginning of the Generic Index.

Scanning
BA/RRM
References within the three sections of BA/RRM can be scanned separately.
1. To locate relevant main meeting references, scan the list of meetings at the begin-
ning of the BA/RRM Meetings Section. Find the main meeting entry and scan the
meeting papers for relevant references. Information presented at the meeting may
be cited under the meeting name as part of its contents. Scan the Sponsor Index to
locate those meetings that can be attributed to a particular sponsor.
2. Check the alphabetical List of Books, CD-ROM, and Other Media at the beginning of
the section for relevant references. When chapters of a book are written by different
authors, they are cited separately following the main entry of the book in which they
appear.
3. Entries in the Literature Reviews, Reports, Patents, and Other References Section
are arranged under Major Concept headings and subheadings. An alphabetical listing
of these headings can be found in the Appendix. Select the Major Concept Heading of
interest to locate groups of subject-related references which best match your topic.
Check the "see also" paragraph under each Major Concept and note any others which
seem pertinent. Scan the section for entries which best suit your topic.
