factors of HAPH are hyperreactivity of pulmonary vasculars on hypoxia, sex (male), smoking,
inadequate physical exercise and obesity. HAPH has slowly progressing course (average
increasing of mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAPmean) makes 0,5-1 mm Hg per years). The
development of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) is complicated frequently by various cardiac
arhythmias and increased mortality (more than in 2-3 times). HAPH and exagerrated response of
pulmonary vessels to hypoxia are correlated with _-AR desensitization, increased activity Ca2+
channels and associated with I allele and I/I genotype of ACE. The indications to medication
treatment of HAPH are development of RVH, hyperreactivity of pulmonary vessels to hypoxia,
systolic PAP 45 mm of Hg and/or PAPmean 30 mm of Hg.

The present study was an attempt to understand the relationship between olfactory system and
high altitude mountain sickness. Albino rats whose olfactory lobes were removed were subjected
to high altitude states under laboratory conditions. Blood and urine samples were collected at
various stages to measure biochemical parameters. Histological examinations of the brains were
done. Rats whose olfactory systems were intact were used as controls. The results suggested that
1.
The olfactory system regulated the pituitary function 2. Hypoxic brain damage occurred
in rats whose olfactory lobes were removed. Conclusion: Olfactory system regulates physiology
at high altitudes. The importance of median fore brain bundle, the release of free radicals as a
possible cause of cerebral damage and the role of regulated breathing are discussed.

The expression and function of Fas in hematopoietic cell directly correlate with the rate of
proliferation, suggesting a potential role for Fas and FasL in the regulation of hematopoietic
homeostasis. It has been observed that High Altitude Polycythemia (HAPC), a form of Chronic
Mountain Sickness (CMS), was closely associated with the environment. Numerout studies have
confirmed that HAPC was a proliferative disease of erythrocyte, and erythropoietic stimulating
factors play an important role in its development. It is useful to determine the serum level of sFas
and sFasL to explore the mechanism of apoptosis in patients with HAPC and healthy people
exposed to high altitude for a long period. METHODS: Serum sFas and sFasL concentrations
were determined by ELISA technique in 10 patients with HAPC, 50 immigrants and 15
Mongolian natives. RESULTS: The concentrations of serum sFas and sFasL are shown in the
table. It was found that serum level of sFas was negatively correlated with serum level of sFasL
in the HAPC group (r= -0.7178, P<0.01).

Compared with other groups, ** P<0.001.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that apoptosis definitely plays a role in the pathogenesis
of HAPC. There is an elevated level of apoptosis in HAPC, and sFasL was of significance in
detecting the changes from compensatory, physical acclimatization to the development of HAPC.
