(2) When the animals were exposed to simulated-altitude at 4500m, HPV was significantly
attenuated in the Tibetan-sheep, Pika, and Yak compared with pig or rat, (3) After NLA (Nw-
nitoro-L-arginine) administration, pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) significantly increased in
Tibetan sheep living at 680, 2300 and 3750m above sea level. However, the increase in PVR after
NLA administration at 3750m was significantly higher than those in other group. But Pika living
at same altitude (3750m) was not affected by NLA administration. From this observation, we
concluded that low Ht, RVW/LVW, and Ppa at high-altitude and significant attenuation of HPV
were characteristics for the animals completely adapted to high-altitude such as Tibetan-sheep,
Pika, and Yak.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is frequently complicated by pulmonary
hypertension (PH) especially at high altitude (HA). Reactivity of pulmonary vessels to hypoxia
could play major role in the development of PH due to COPD. Aim: to study the reactivity of
pulmonary vessels to hypoxia in highlanders (HL) and lowlanders (LL) with COPD. Right heart
catheterization was performed in 23 male HL with moderate COPD (group 1) and in 33 age
matched LL with moderate (group 2) and severe COPD (group 3). All the measurements obtained
were recorded at baseline during room air breathing and during hypoxic challenge (breathing
hypoxic gas mixture with FiO2=10% in nitrogen for 30 min). Results presented in the table.

between HL and LL Thus, hyperactivity of pulmonary vessels to hypoxia is characteristic for
highlanders with COPD and PH. Besides in HL even moderate COPD is frequently associated
with more severe PH and target organ damage - hypertrophy and dilation of right heart.

The aim of this work was to study the incidence, some mechanisms, symptoms and sings of
high altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) and to work out the approaches to diagnostics and
treatment of HAPH. 730 highlanders aged of 30-59 yrs and 412 young highlanders aged of 14-16
yrs were examined. Methods was included: standard epidemiological approaches recommended
by WHO, ECG, two dimensional EchoCG, 24-hours ECG monitoring, spirometry, right heart
catheterization (in 136 highlanders), assessment of arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2), at a
part of cases assessment of a angotensinconverting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphisms, _-
adrenoceptors density (_-AR) on membrane lymphocytes and Ca2+ channels activity on
trombocytes. The results have shown, that highlanders population were divided on
normoresponders, hyperresponders, and subjects with stable HAPH. The most important risk
