high altitude (4000m) to obtain data of the AE of healthy men on acute ascension to high altitude.
At the same time, ACE genotypes were determined by PCR. The prevalence of AMS was also
determined. Finally, the relationship among them was analyzed. Results: At sea level,
SVR,SVC,BAD, BAR and SaO2 between genotype II and ID+DD genotype (normal) men did
not differ significantly_P_0.05__but on acute exposure to high altitude in the sea-level
natives, the SVR and SaO2 differed significantly between genotype II and ID+DD genotype
(P<0.05)_Logistic regression showed that significantly changed SVR was a significant risk
factor for AMS _F= 16.04, P=0.000_, and genotype II is a protective factor for AMS on acute
exposure to high altitude(F=13.63, P=0.001). Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the
Insertion/Deletion polymorphism of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene did not
affect arterial compliance in normal men at sea level. Significantly changed SVR was a
significant risk factor for AMS, and genotype II is a protective factor for AMS on acute exposure
to high altitude.

Endothein-1 (ET-1) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) are important factors of
pulmonary vascular muscularization and formation of vascular rebirth in the pika, taken as an
example of a hypoxic adaptive animal, it is still not clear as to whether these above-mentioned
vaso-active substances are in existence or not, and how their functions and regulatory
mechanisms and relationships with each other function. The aim of this study was to observe the
role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothein-1 (ET-1) on pulmonary vascular
structural remodeling in rats and pikas. 30 male Wistar rats (three groups of 10 rats, each taken to
3780m, divided into 24h, 2wk and 3wk duration, respectively) and 10 male pikas. The levels of
VEGF and ET-1 were measured using a kit by ELISA method. Pulmonary tissue was taken out to
stain with elastica-Van Gieson. The amount of pulmonary arteries (<100µm) and the component
ratio of MA (muscular artery), PMA (partial muscular artery), and NMA (non-muscular artery)
were calculated using a light microscope. The ratio of right ventricle weight to left ventricle plus
septum weight (RV/LV+S) was measured. The changes of ET-1 from 24hr to 2wk and 3wk were
1.25±0.12, 1.35±0.75 and 1.34±0.92 pg/ml in the rats and 1.09±0.92 pg/ml in the pikas
(mean±SD). The VEGF increased from137.9±11.1pg/ml at 24hr to 236.07±47.9 pg/ml at 2wk
and to 245.67±31.3 pg/ml at 3wk in the rats. The ET-1 and VEGF revealed significant differences
in rats with time (p<0.05 - 0.001)_ but no significant difference was found between pika and
24hr hypoxic rats. The ratio of MA, PMA obviously increased, and NMA decreased significantly,
right ventriclar hypertrophy were developed in different groups hypoxic rats. Pikas had an
absence of high muscularized pulmonary arteriole. NMA of pikas is obviously higher than that of
2wk and 3wk rat groups, Ratio of RV/LV+S was 0.50%±0.03 at 3wk in rats and 0.21%±0.03 in
the pikas (P<0.001). In conclusion, VEGF and ET-1 are involved in the muscularization of
pulmonary vessels during hypoxia in rats, whereas in plateau pikas VEGF and ET-1 are
maintained at normal values.

The aim of this study was to investigate the state of erythropoiesis in patients with aplastic
anemia during high altitude adaptation. Patients with aplastic anemia were examined at the low
altitude (760 m above the sea level) and on the 10th, 20th and 40th days of altitude adaptation
(3200 m). The number of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood, serum erythropoietin activity, as
well as state of erythropoiesis in the bone marrow were determined in 101 patients. Kinetics of
acid hemolysis in the red blood cells and a level of fetal hemoglobin were investigated in 28
patients. Our investigations have showed that the initial level of fetal hemoglobin and serum
