using immunoblotting. It was shown that after the hypoxia influence expression of iNOS protein
was increased in left and right ventricles of hearts as well as in some other tissues. The elevation
on highest altitude increase expression of iNOS protein. However, the increase of expression was
less significant than the same one found in non-adapted rats. The results may evidence that high-
altitude hypoxia cause cell phenotype reprogramming to induce iNOS protein expression in
tissues. More potent hypoxic influence after adaptation to hypoxia caused the additional gene
activation and followed superinduction of iNOS.

Objective: It has been reported that the Chinese herb, Dracocephallum heterophyllm (DH),
has the protective effect on ultrastructure of hippocampus under the condition of hypoxia. In this
study, we investigated whether DH has a protecting effect on cerebral cortex and to explore the
degree and the mechanism of DH on the ultrastructure of cerebral cortex and develop a new anti-
hypoxia medicine. Methods: Imaging quantitative analysis and morphological observation were
used to study the cerebral cortex with an electronic microscope after taking DH. Results: The
hypoxia control group_at the altitude of 3400m_showed the features as follows: The number of
mitochondria was reduced (P<0.01); the average square of mitochondria increased (P<0.01); the
basal lamina thickness of capillaries increased (P<0.01); a lot of vesicies showed in endothelium
cells and the axo-spine and axo-dendritic width became narrow (P<0.01). The experimental group
(DH group) was showed that the pyramidal cells no obvious swelling. The numbers and the
average square of the mitochondria were significantly increased (P<0.05) with complete
appearance of capillary and a few vesicies showed in endothelium cells. Conclusion DH showed
obvious protective effects on ultrastructure of the cerebral cortex of the brain.

To investigate the hemodynamic adaptation of immigration populations to high altitude, 15
parameters of hemodynamics were measured by XG-2 type circulation tests for 2092 immigrants
in different grades and times in high altitude. Results: 1. After rapid entry into high altitude in
different grades, P, MSP, MAP, VPT1 and TPR increased along with an increase in altitudes, and
SV, CO, SI, CI and BV decreased along with a decrease in altitude. All above changes were
statistically significant (p<0.01). 2. At different times after rapid entry at the same grade of high
altitude, P and VR were reduced according to increased time at high altitude. MSP, MDP, MAP
and SV increased along with increased time. CO, SI and CI also increased but without notable
differences; 3. MSP, MAP, VPT1, SV, CO and CI increased according to the increasing age of
the subjects. Decreasing BV and TPR along with an increase in the subjects' age were discovered
for different age groups of the population after rapid entry to high altitude. The difference was
significant (P<0.05). We conclude that extreme cold and hypoxic environment can influence the
hemodynamics of immigration population who rapid entry to high altitude.
