established hypertension is 39.56%. Patients with treatment rate of established hypertension is
29.64%, control rate is 9.68%. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of hypertension in the mid-
elderly population in the urban and rural areas of Lhasa is high and the causes might be
associated with the special geography surroundings, changes in life style, more fat and protein
intakes and less physical activities as well as low education etc. The methods of detectives,
treatment and the control of hypertension are still need to be improved.

Ten years experience of a french association in the field of improving traditional medecine in
an himalayan area : Zanskar (jammu &kashmir, India). After desciption of the political
environment and the sanitary organisation of the indian system we describe the specificity of an
himalayan area located at 3500meters altitude. We listed the pathology the most common in the
local dispensaries and the way to treat them .The traditionnal tibetan medecine is the most used
way for the local people to treat their diseases. Since few years the local practitionners (amchis)
organised themselves to improve their practice and generate new local amchi. They built up a
local center and organised a 5 years study for young amchi selected in every village. We describe
how we helped them to the training in primary health services care ( W.H.O.
recommendation). We analyse what kind of problems the local practitionners of this remote area
are faced with. We finish by issues for the future in terms of appropriate, safe and effective use of
taditional medecine and integrate the amchis with health care systems.

Adaptation of male Wistar rats to high altitude (2100 meters, 3 weeks) with or without
intermittent hypoxic training (IHT - "elevation" in hypobaric chamber each 2nd day 1 hour at
5600 meters) was studied. It was found that in control group oxygen consumption and tidal
volume was on 30 % lower than in IHT group. In the last one, additional mitochondria were
formed in the lung and other tissues. In control rats, colonic temperature positively correlated
with tidal volume, and oxygen consumption. IHT group was characterized with positively
correlation between colonic temperature and breath rate, but not with oxygen consumption.
Correlation between lung ultrastructure and breathing indices in both groups was also observed. It
can be concluded that after high altitude adaptation, the regulation of breathing pattern to
metabolic rate is realized by tidal volume increase. After IHT pattern of breathing is changed in
connection with rise of metabolic rate and tidal volume. Since reserve of tidal volume increase is
limited, pattern of breathing is regulated by modulation of breath rate.

High-altitude modification of cell phenotype is not sufficiently investigated. The current
study was undertaken to determine a possibility of high-altitude hypoxia to induce and
superinduce inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression on heart cells leading to
cardioprotection. Male Wistar rats were exposed high altitude hypoxia (2200 m, Elbrus region, 21
days). Some rats were additionally subjected hypobaric chamber hypoxia séance (5600 m, 3 h).
Twenty-four hours after this treatment, both groups were sacrificed, tissues were investigated
