(alkaline) with altitude, the pH harvested just after the first decreased phase, when increased
VBHT was observed, revealed the tendency of decline to acidic. Discussion: Hypoxia induces
hyperventilation, then respiratory alkalosis and alkaline urination. Respiratory alkalosis may be
regulated by secretion of base-excess through kidney, so, urinary pH reveals alkaline tendency.
But it is difficult to explain why the urinary pH decline to acidic, when VBHT revealed rather
increasing tendency. This phenomenon may not relate to high altitude illness nor acclimatization.
Conclusion: It needs more observations, not only short term but also long term, to solve this
paradox.

Objective: By re-visiting and investigating the medical history of 218 Tabetan women and 6
death cases (in 2 years), we are trying to find out how many risk factors and what's the most risky
factor which would affect the maternal life of Tibetan women in rural areas. Point out our opinion
and countermeasure. Methods: All 218 subjects had been gone through the questionnaire of
family members and medical history, normal physical examination, as well as obstetric, B-
ultrasonic, blood and urine examination. 6 cases of maternal death were revisited and studied
from the recording book during 1999 to 2000. Results: The social risk factors are: poor
knowledge of health care, heavy household chores, poor public transportation, bad sanitizing
habit, heavy economic burden and poor medical service. Related disease factors were:
malnutrition, anemia, abnormal pelvis and fetal position, obstetris hemorrhage, miscarries, acute
vignettes postpartum, et al. Social factor of the death cases is poor financial support of the family
and the obstetric hemorrhage. Hypertension of pregnancy, pregnancy associated with serious
pulmonary infection and severe anemia is the next. Countermeasure: It is found that the
improvement in promoting the health care knowledge and consciousness of sanitation among
rural women, training local health care staffs to provide better and more professional services to
women is needed. It is also important to improve the public transportation and the ability and
capacity of medical services in rural areas in Tibet.

Objective: To study the effect of inhaling nitric oxide on high altitude erythrocytosis.
Methods: 26 patients with HAEC were enrolled in the experimental group and the equal number
of normal subjects in the control group. They both received 250ml IV infusion of 5% Glucose
containing 16ml of salviae miltiorrhize. The patients in control group inspired oxygen
intermittently with a low-folw (1-3 liter/minute) while the experimental group inspired a gas
mixture containing 10ppm NO at 3 liter/minute (BG-95 nitric oxide therapeutic instrument). They
received NO 100 minutes/day. Results: The experimental group showed improvement in the
clinical symptoms in 1-3 days, Hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value, erythrocyte count
began to declined in 3 days. The transcutaneous oximetry began to go up in 5 minutes. The
control group showed improvement in clinical symptoms in 7-15 days, however their hemoglobin
concentration, hematocrit value, erythrocyte count did not declined obviously. The difference of
all the parameters measured before and after the NO treatment in the experimental group was
significant. It is also significantly different in comparison with the control group. It was found
from the follow up checks in 2 months that the therapeutic effect of NO inhaling was stable and
there was no poisoning side effect found in the experimental group. Conclusion: Inhaling nitric
oxide has been approved as a good and safe therapeutic way to treat patients with HAEC.
