Tibet Plateau is well known for its high altitude, strong ultraviolet radiation, wicked climate
and unique geological nature condition and it is one of the most rigorous regions for human to
habitat in the world. The native Tibetans who have been living in Tibetan Plateau for thousands
years gradually adapt to this nature environment. They explored and accumulated experience
during the course of striving illness, and eventually created the unique medicine system-----
Tibetan Medicine. The Tibetan Medicine has been practiced about 4000 years in the region and it
didn't form the integrated system until 8 century AD. The Tibetan Medicine is based on three
factors (rLung, mKhris-pa, Bad-kan) and five proto-element (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Space).
The diagnostic techniques include visual observation, touch and interrogation. Most of the
medicinal plants (herbs) that are used for clinic treatment are grown and harvested in Tibetan
Plateau. These medicinal plants are effective without poison after being specifically processed
and are critical in keeping Tibetans healthy. Tibetan Medicine is a traditional medicine system
that originated from special conditions and is created by Tibetans who live in Tibet Plateau for
thousands of years. It is characterized that southern part of the plateau is lower in altitude and
wet, while northern part is dry and the altitude is high. In 14 century AD, the Southern and
Northern Tibetans realized the differences between their medicinal practices based on its altitude,
climate, products (herbs) availability of the two parts, and two specific medicinal styles were
created with its own styles. Tibetan Medicine is rich in theory and clinic experience in regional
diseases (including anoxia). It has unique insight and value in diagnosing and treating acute and
chronic hypoxia induced diseases, supplies some precious experience in preventing and treating
other diseases that caused by acute or chronic hypoxia. Recently we started using modern
techniques to study the effect of Tibetan Medicine in treating acute and chronic hypoxia induced
diseases. We have got some progress in clinic treatment, for example heart disease. We tested
some traditional Tibetan medicinal herbs in resisting acute and chronic hypoxia in animal trials in
high altitude and analyzed the ingredients of medicine plants that were used in the trails. The
results show that most medicinal plants have curative effective in treating acute and chronic
hypoxia.

Pulse examination is to judge diseases by means of using doctor's fingers to palpate patient's
pulses which are shown in the superficial arteries. It is a unique diagnostic method of Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this paper, the changing rule of sphygmogram of younger Tibetan
natives and Han Chinese at the different altitudes was investigated. Methods: 400 sphygmograms
of Tibetan and Han youths have been analyzed with the type ZM-I TCM sphygmometer in
different altitude (3703m at Jiegu and 2261m at Xining). Results: Equal, infrequent, abrupt and
wiry pulses were showed in both Tibetan and Han health youths. There was some difference
between Tibetan and Han youth's sphygmogram at Jiegu and Xining involved in their
physiological parameters. The wiry pulse was mainly observed in youths of Jiegu area and the
abrupt pulse was mainly detected in Xining. It tended to consider that the reason is related with
the altitude and frigid climate. There was also some difference could be showed among different
nationalities. For example, the Han youths are mainly demonstrated as wiry pulse and abrupt one
for the Tibetan youth. Conclusions: It is considered that the difference between Tibetan and Han
may be related to the responsibility of the cardiovascular system and the mechanism of
decomposition after Han nationality moved to a high altitude. A remarkable difference has also
been showed concerning about sex, that is, the wiry pulse for the male and the abrupt for the
female. So it probably related with the characteristics of blood dynamics.
