calculated separately. The survival rate of rats in the control group was 53.33%, while in the high
dose and small dose treatment groups it was 100% and 80%, respectively. There was a significant
difference between both treatment groups and the control group. b) Apnea hypoxia test: After
treatment, each rat was put into a 125 ml vitreous bottle, and then isolated from the outside air.
The duration of time until respiration ceased was recorded. Results were as follows: the survival
time of rats in the control group was 658.75±106.19s, while in the high dose and small dose
treatment groups it was 910.05±145.26s and 826.45±132.50s respectively. There was a
significant difference between each treatment group and the control group (p<0.00-0.001). c)
Oxygen consumption test: Oxygen consumption was measured before and 1 hour after treatment.
The oxygen consumption of rats in the control group was 0.34±0.06, while in the high dose and
the low dose treatment groups it was 0.269±0.04 and 0.28±0.09, respectively. There was a
significant difference between each treatment group and the control group (p<0.05-0.01).
Conclusion: Silverweed cinquefoil root could prolong survival time and improve survival rates of
rats under hypoxic conditions, while decreasing oxygen consumption significantly. Silverweed
cinquefoil root has high anti-hypoxia activity.

To investigate the effect of altitude on sexual function. Method: This investigation utilized a
questionnaire to evaluate sexual function in 1675 females and 2374 males living in the three
different regions: Xian, Xining and Guoluo. Results: a) There is no significant difference among
the three groups in erectile function in men less than 40 years of age. There is a significant
difference between the Guoluo and Xian groups in sexual function in men 40 years, as well as
between men 50 years in the Xining and Xian groups. With increasing age, sexual function scores
decreased significantly. There was no significant difference in sexual function among the three
female groups below 40 years of age. There was a significant difference in female sexual function
between the Guoluo and Xian groups over 40 years old, as well as between the Xining and Xian
groups over 60 years. b) There was no significant difference in the frequency of sexual
intercourse among the three groups below 40 years of age. There was a significant difference in
the frequency of sexual intercourse between the Guoluo and Xian groups over 50 years of age.
There was also a significant difference between the Xining and Xian groups over 60 years old. c)
There was no significant difference among the three groups in the duration of sexual intercourse
among the 3 areas, while the sexual intercourse duration decreased gradually with increasing age.
When subjects go to low altitude, their sexual function strengthens. On the contrary, when they
go to high altitude, their sexual function worsens. Conclusion: A highland environment may
negatively affect sexual function

Questionnaire study was performed to investigate the effects of acetazolamide on prevention
and treatment of mountain sickness, which is not officially accepted among indication diseases in
Japan from the standpoint of medical insurance system. Study subjects were 113 alpinist-teams
which climbed the mountains 6000m or higher during the period between January 2000 and
December 2001, among which 409 members ( male 343, female 66 ) belonging to 68 teams
responded to the questionnaire. 46 among 68 teams carried acetazolamide during mountain-
climbing. 67.4% acquired the medicine from their acquaintance doctors, 15.2% by prescription,
