ALB NAG activity of red blood cell superoxide dismutase (RBC-SOD), malonyldialdehyde
(MDA) level and erythrocyte filtration index (EFI) of 231 normal subjects and 76 patients with
HAPC at different altitudes were measured. RESULT Urinary ALB excretion, NAG, the level of
plasma MDA and EFI were higher and the activity of RBC-SOD was lower in patients with
HAPC than those of the control group. The differences were more significant with increasing
altitude. Urinary ALB and NAG were positively correlated to EFI(r=0.7801 and 0.7637
respectively) but not correlated to the content of MDA and the activity of RBC-SOD(r=0.1014
and 0.1435 respectively). CONCLUSION EFI exerted an independent influence on urinary ALB
and NAG. The increase in urinary ALB and NAG strongly correlated with the increase in EFI. In
HAPC, the decrease of erythrocyte deformability caused by the increase of peroxidation of lipids
may play a role in the increased excretion of ALB and NAG.

Aim: to study the prevalence of risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) in miners
commuting between high altitude (3700-4200 m, 2-4 week shift) and low altitude (760-1500 m,
2-4 weeks of holiday). Methods: 345 employees (329 male and 16 female) were examined; all
worked at Kum-Tor mine site (Central Tyan-Shan, Kyrgyzstan). The age averaged 41.4±7.7
years. The examination was carried out at 3800 meters above sea level, predominantly on 3-5th
day of beginning the shift. The blood samples for lipid profile were obtained fasting, 12 hours
after last meal. Five basic risk factors were revealing according to ATP: smoking, arterial
hypertension (BP 140/90 mmHg), low level of high density lipoprotein (< 40 mg/dL), family
history of early CHD (CHD in men of first line < 55 years, in women of first line <65 years) and
age (men 45 years, women 55 years). The calculations of 10-year risk of CHD for patients with
multiple risk factors (equal or more than 2) were based on the Framingham tables. Results: The
incidence of smoking was 53.4%, arterial hypertension - 9.91%, low level of high density
lipoproteins - 44.4%, burdened family history - 3.21%, age -35%. Twenty one employees had
high fasting glucose level in blood (eg, diabetes), considered as risk equivalent of CHD according
to ATP III. Results concerning 10 year risk of CHD are presented in the table.

Conclusion: We demonstrated a high prevalence of risk factors of CHD and subjects with
high 10-years risk of CHD development among miners commuting between low and high
altitude.

It is well known that high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) is associated with
genetic traits. AIM: To investigate the association of different gene polymorphisms with HAPH.
METHODS: We studied 145 Kyrgyz male highlanders (66 normal and 79 with HAPH). The
pulmonary haemodynamic was measured by right heart catheterization. HAPH was diagnosed
