This is one of the quotations of Lord Baden-Powell. In 2007 we will
celebrate together the 100 years of Scouting. I am sure you remember
your period in active Scouting /Guiding, the training, the challenges,
the jamborees, wonderful evenings around the camp-fires either in your
patrol or as a part of a big event. And above all you have been a part
of the wonderful Fellowship around the world. You have a lot of friends
sharing and working for the same values learned in the youth move-
ment.
It was a gift to you and I am sure you would like to thank for it. You can
do so by giving financial support to the Scout & Guide Spirit Flame
project. Your gift could be one Euro per year you have been active in
Scouting or Guiding. Why not ask some of your old friends to do the
same?
On February 22nd 2007 a flame, the Scout & Guide Spirit Flame, will
be lit in Nyeri in Kenya by representatives from WAGGGS, WOSM and
ISGF and brought to Brownsea Island to be there on the evening of July
31, 2007 (the eve of Scouting's Sunrise August 1st, 2007).
It will be a strong symbol to all that the Spirit given to us through Scout-
ing and Guiding still means a lot to us and will do for the next genera-
tions as well.
I have been in Guiding 46 years and tomorrow I will transfer 46 Euros to
the Flame project (bank-account). Would you like to join me? I hope so.
In June 2006 nearly 200 fellowship-members from the NordicBaltic
Sub-region met in Bodø, waiting to see the mid-night sun and experi-
ence the very special nature in the northern part of Norway. In this
region there are also many famous places to visit, like the old Tra ding
Post, Kjerringøy. This is where the famous writer Knut Hamsund
(awarded the Nobel Prize) landed in 1879.Many of his books are set
here, and Saltstraumen, the world's strongest maelstrom. Towards the
broad horizon of characteristic mountain profiles you could even catch
a glimpse of the sea eagle. All the participants are now members of the
famous Sea Eagle Club and they have all got their special pin.
The sub-region has got a new chair, Hanne Borgstrøm from Denmark.
It was also during this sub-regional gathering that the first fund-raising
activity in support of the Scout and Guide Spirit Flame took place.
Saturday morning the 24.th of June the participants were invited for
a walk in a nearby park. The theme for this walk was: "Are Baden-

Po well's ideas, put forward 100 years ago, still valid to day?". This
was a journey through Baden-Powell's thoughts about scouting,
leadership and responsibility. Along the path there were quotations
from Baden Powell hung up in the trees and the participants could
do their own reflections. Every participant paid a fee before the com-
mencement, and this morning we raised 1100 Euro. It was a good
start as the project will need more than 30.000 Euro to cover the
Flame Project.
One of the participants said to me:" I am so happy to have had this
opportunity to support the project. Even if the flame will not pass our
region, I feel I am a part of it now. I can see it will raise the visibility of
the Scout and Guide Spirit."
Finland will host the Nordic Baltic Sub-Regional Gathering in 2009 in
Aaland.
