The Under-20, which is held every two years on odd years, has historically been
the cradle of the future South American stars. In 1983 for
example, Brazil broke Uruguay's streak of four consecutive
titles led by Bebeto, Dunga and Jorginho. In 1985, the Brazilian
stars to win the back-to-back championship were Taffarel, Muller and Romário.
All six players were n the Brazilian National Team that won the 1994 World
Cup.

Many Argentine stars also stood out in past championships such as Diego
Armando Maradona, Ramón Diaz, Pablo Aimar,

Ronaldinho and Juan
Sebastián Verón
.
