DID YOU KNOW...
·
During a typical match lasting 45 minutes the shuttle will be in play for 20 minutes. In this time
a player will:
o
make at least 350 90-degree changes of direction or more;
o
strike the shuttle about 400 times;
o
make about 150 full-arm swings (baseball pitchers make less swings in a game!);
o
cover every inch of the court and run more than one mile
·
A shuttlecock can reach speeds of up to 330 km/h at top-level competition where a rally will last an
average of 24 seconds which makes badminton one of the most dynamic sports today.
·
Of the estimated 225 million badminton players in the world, 75% are from Asia. On top of that list is China who
boasted over 165 million players, closely followed by Japan, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and the Philippines.
·
Compare a tennis match to badminton; a tennis match at Wimbledon one year, lasted 198 minutes while a badminton
final lasted only 76 minutes. However, the actual amount of time the ball/shuttle remained in play were 18 minutes and
37 minutes respectively. This means more playing action in badminton than in an entire tennis match.
·
Comparing the same tennis and badminton matches further, the number of shots played were 1,004 in Tennis to 1,972
in badminton. Let's assume a player moves 22 feet per shot per player and we will find that the tennis player covered
about 2 miles, and the badminton player 4 miles. So the badminton player ran TWICE as far in under half the time!
