Superbike racing is arguably the most exciting form of
motorsport in the modern sporting calendar and has been
sanctioned at World Championship level since 1988 by the
Federation Internacionale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The series
has established itself as one of the leading sports of the
millennium.
World Superbike is a unique motorsport offering a format of two
races with a guarantee of closely fought battles on the track.
World Superbike riders come from all corners and are among the most fearless professional
athletes in the world. The machines are derived from models sold by manufacturers in
showrooms in every territory around the world.
Asian riders have started making headway in World Superbike.
From one Asian rider in 2004, this year will see the participation of
two more Japanese riders. Joining Noriyuki Haga this year are
Yukio Kagayama and Norick Abe and all three riders have gotten
off to a flying start in 2005 entrenching themselves in the top 8.
In 2004, the World Superbike Championship reached more than 2
billion viewers around the world via 89 television networks
beamed into 170 countries with 2,275 broadcast hours and an equivalent media value of USD612
million. The extent of television time dedicated to the Championship by broadcasters further
underscores the unparalleled popularity if the series around the world.
