The world will converge in Duisburg and its partner cities Bottrop,
Oberhausen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. Half a million spectators, 38
sports, 177 disciplines, 3000 athletes from 100 nations at 27 venues -
the World Games will be THE sporting highlight in 2005! From 14th to
24th July 2005 experience a new way of sports! But the World Games
offers much more than contests for gold medals.
Artistic, precise, gladiatorial and forceful - the World Games disciplines
combines many attributes. Whether the athletes are heavy Sumo-
wrestlers, water-proofed like a canoe polo player or as vibrant as an
Aerobics dancer - each of the more than 3000 participants will teach us
a lesson in self assurance, motivation, discipline and courage his or her
own way. They all enjoy competition matching their skills with the
world's top athletes.
The World Games 2005 are being held under the auspicious patronage of
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is collaborated by 12
international sports governing bodies including International Badminton
Federation (IBF), International Bowling Federation (FIQ), World Taekwondo
Federation (WTF) and International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB).
The Games were originally held in Santa Clara, USA in 1981 and has since
been hosted in 5 other countries, Akita being the last one in 2001.
Participation in the World Games has grown in popularity among spectators
and athletes alike. This year, the World Games is expected to draw over
3,000 athletes, compared to humble beginnings of 1,500 athletes back in
1981.
