Superbike racing is arguably the most exciting form of motorsport in
the modern sporting calendar and has been sanctioned at World
Championship level since 1988 by the Federation Internacionale de
Motocyclisme (FIM). The series has established itself as one of the
leading sports of the millennium.
World
Superbike
is
a
unique
motorsport offering a format of two races with a guarantee of closely
fought battles on the track. World Superbike riders come from all
corners and are among the most fearless professional athletes in
the world. The machines are derived from models sold by
manufacturers in showrooms in every territory around the world.
Australian rider, Troy Corser (Suzuki), staved off a strong resurgence of form from fellow Aussie,
Chris Vermeulen (Honda), to finish the 2005 season with the title. He is set to defend his
championship crown in 2006 although he expects to face tough competition from a field of riders
out to chase him down for the same honours in the coming season.
Asian riders have started making headway in World Superbike. From one
solitary Asian rider in 2004, to three Japanese riders the following year, the
season ended with Yukio Kagayama and Noriyuki Haga finishing in the top
5 of the riders' standings.
