ancient pines, or around the harbour to visit the penal
settlements on Sarah Island - a great venue for a themed
Colonial BBQ or marquee sit downs. Gordon River Cruises
also own a smaller yacht for more exclusive group tours.
If that is not enough Federal have bought into the ABT
West Coast Wilderness railway. This historic railway has received
a government grant of $24 million to restore the great route
from Strahan on the coast, inland as far as Queenstown, only
accessible by rail in the old days. The train is steam driven, and
carriages are replicas of early twentieth century trains. The trip
is a PCO's delight for a colonial inspired /murder mystery
themed dinner, complete with breaks at a couple of restored
stations to pan for gold, visit a mine or go for a nature walk.
Although Strahan's revival and coming good fortune is in
no small way inspired by Federal Hotels & Resorts' $4 million
investment in the village centre, there are also plenty of other
operators and smaller hotels offering additional support.
In terms of F&B outlets, mention must be made of the
independent Franklin's Manor in Strahan, in the 1896 built
Harbour Masters House. This fine dining restaurant set in a
grand Victorian house has an award winning wine cellar and a
2 Michelin Star chef. Evening meals are either a seven course or
eight course dégustation, and the French influenced cuisine is
superb. Franklins is the only true fine dining experience in
Strahan and is an essential stop for the CEOs or senior execs of
your corporate group. They even have limited accommodation
