The Launceston International is one of the classics of the
city's accommodation - centrally located and capable of large
corporate groups. Cameron's is the best fine hotel dining in the
city although there are several superb indies including the
fabulous award-winning Stillwater.
Day 03
Breakfast activities at the Country Club Resort included a
quick course in fly fishing and also a golf session. Driving
around the estate we were shown several rooms for functions,
including the F&B fine dining outlet. They have a dedicated
theming department who have readymade props, many with a
standard Hollywood theme. Recommended for all-in-one
events - golfing in the morning, afternoon meetings, then
function at night (or any order you like really!)
A visit to Rosevears for a wine tour and cellar tasting
followed. This is a marvellous room for functions with huge
views over the valley, river and hills. All this and great wine too.
They also offer an interesting guided tour of the cellars.
Participants then travelled down the valley to Strathlynn
Winery - one of the real highlights of a winery themed tour -
home to award-winning Pirie (absolutely the best Australian
fizzer!). The winery's restaurant was voted Best Tourism
Restaurant 2002. The meal was held Mediterranean style
outside on the lawn. And like every meal so far, perfect, and a
fraction of Sydney or Melbourne costs for fare of a similar
standard. After lunch we made a visit to Cataract Gorge, which
can be illuminated at night for private functions at the Gorge
Restaurant at the heart of the park. There are also boats available
to hire to take cocktail parties up the river. The restaurant is
available literally 24 hours a day for hire and the immaculate
English styled garden of rhododendrons and conifers create a
perfect venue for a Midsummer Nights Dream theme.
To finish off the famil we visited Woolmers Estate, a
preserved colonial/settler home complete with original
furnishings. This museum is a household frozen in time, and
although the interiors are closely protected, there are sites on
the estate for functions. Surprisingly, this was the first site
inspection of the famil which didn't serve wine!
Overall Impression of Famil
Tasmania is a great option for groups which don't necessarily
want beach and sun. For food and wine lovers it is probably one
of the best destinations in the southern hemisphere (recently
voted Best Temperate Island in the World by Condé Nast
Traveler Magazine). In addition to the superlative venues and
chefs for functions delegates will be impressed by the natural
beauty of the destination. There are also plenty of options for
active and eco-incentives though this tour was mainly a
gourmet's journey.

Participant's Response
" I am completely sold on Tassie as a destination and
can't wait to do another group there. We have CRT for
over 450 delegates booked in Hobart (early 2003) and a
group of 30 high achievers (from an International Auto
Manufacturer) doing a fabulous program featuring
Freycinet in the first quarter of next year."
