Independent tour
operators in Strahan offer
interesting diversions. Not to
be missed is a trip to the
amazing Henty Sand Dunes,
where four wheel ATV
biking trips operate. Younger
delegates may also like to
`Sand Surf " the 30 metre
dunes. Nearby, on the Henty
River, smaller groups can go
on sunset Platypus Spotting
Kayak tours. Even if the
notoriously shy platypuses
don't show their face, the trip
will give delegates a glimpse of Tasmanian rainforest wildlife
including birds, Tassie devils and snakes (not as dangerous as
they sound!). Operating from the harbour are also Rapids
Shooting Jet boats, helicopters and sea planes for scenic flights,
and sailing ships for fishing tours.
In terms of local entertainment, the Round Earth Theatre
Group perform daily an interactive and entertaining historical
play "The Ship That Never Was" at the semi-openair theatre at
the Strahan Visitors Centre. They can arrange exclusive
performances for groups and also have routines for historical
sites in the area, including the penal settlement at Sarah Island.
With all this going, how come you haven't had an event
there yet? Probably because of the time it takes to get groups to
Strahan. Although most groups arrive through Launceston,
there are plans afoot by Rex Airlines to start bringing in smaller
planes to Burnie which will cut down considerably the
previous four hour journey. Also, Branson is increasing his
flights to Launceston, so obviously the word is out and
operators are aware of the Strahan buzz. But even driving
through the Tasmanian wilderness all afternoon to reach
Strahan is unlikely to attract many complaints from your group!
Strahan has received an award for "Best Tourism
development in Australia" from the ATC, and the Chicago
Tribune voted it the "Best Little Town in the World" . With
massive investment from local hotel and tour groups,Tasmania's
West has been won.The development is really something to see,
unique to Australia and it's only a matter of time before it
becomes Tasmania's No.1 MICE attraction. Book now before
the whole world discovers it!
