Name:
DECA-dance (Decade and Dance).

Happenings Australia & Artistic Catering
Type:
10 Year Celebration Cocktail Party
Event Management Company:
Happenings Australia Pty Ltd. supported by Artistic Catering, Solution RED and
ICMI.
Purpose/brief:
Happenings Australia and Artistic Catering were both celebrating a decade of
service to clients and wanted to stage an "over the top" evening of decadence,
fun, entertainment, fabulous food and drink.
Number on Event Team:
8
Venue:
Overseas Passenger Terminal, Station Pier, Port Melbourne Victoria.
Pax:
350
Budget:
Program:
Guests were to be taken on a journey which aimed to deliver an experience "beyond
this world into the realms of heavenly delight and devilish pleasures". Upon
arrival at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, guests were greeted by eccentric
American tourists, backpackers and business travellers with suitcases and
luggage, all on their way to another destination. Guests however, did not know
where the journey would take them.
Guests ascended via the "Blue Room" and into an ethereal "White Room" where they
were entertained by an elevated harpist, the Three Tenors (dressed in white),
and Born in a Taxi as human statues. The Show Bags, complete with white feathers
and sequins, provided the glamour along with Marilyn Monroe. Guests at this
stage were offered a shiatsu massage.
Beyond the "White Room", guests passed through a benign black space featuring a
caricaturist, Elvis and a Harley Davidson through the gates of Dante's Inferno
to the "Red Room" - a den of iniquity and the haunt of Cath Jamison, woman of
deception. The room also featured a jazz ensemble; and Class A DJ.
Celebrations continued into the night with "The Show Bags" reappearing in
vibrant red to fire up the party.
Challenges:
The venue was very raw with no real infrastructure. We took it from what was
basically a shell and turned it into something glamorous and completely
unrecognisable.
Special Touches:
Each of the four participating companies "adopted" one of the colours (white,
red, black and blue) and dressed staff accordingly for the event. Happenings
staff wore platinum blonde wigs, the Artistic crew dressed in black French
berets and polo-necks, the ICMI team wore blue Hawaiian shirts and Solution Red
turned out in red.
Gifts:
A tin of Logo'ed chocolates from all four participating companies.
Final Comment:
Deca-dance achieved exactly what we wanted - a night to totally
indulge our clients and thank them for their loyalty and support over the preceding 10 years.
In addition it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the "A" team - Happenings, Artistic,
Solution RED and ICMI - and their unique combination of skills, creativity and experience.
