Mice Magazine - MIAA 25 Aug 03

M I A A P D
It was great to see the strong endorsement by the members
of the important constitutional changes that were passed at
the EGM in June. Although numbers attending on the night
reflected the coldness of the winter's evening, the
resounding view of the membership was expressed through
an overwhelming proxy vote in favour of the changes.
MIAAnet continues to provide a summary of these
important changes, and will incorporate proposed fee levels
to reflect the changes in the membership categories. As
members will see, the key objective of the National Council
in relation to fees is to match the existing structure as much
as possible. However, clearly in the initial transition, there
will be some members who will pay less and others more
than currently. This is unavoidable and is a reflection of the
breadth of the change.
In relation to the changes made to the Council and
corporative governance structure, members will be ask to
participate in elections for MIAA representatives in the
coming months. For the first time, both branch and national
elections will be held concurrently, giving you a holistic
process for choosing who you wish to represent your
interests.
As you can see by this issue of mice.net, the attention of the
national office has also been strongly focused on
professional development programs for the industry. We are
all very excited about this new approach and look forward to
member feedback about the career paths and proposed
topics. The gut feel is that 2004 will be a great year for skills
development within our industry.
Finally, work on the Federal Government Green Paper
consultation process has stepped up again. The outcomes
from the first round were very beneficial to our sector, and
it is now time to ensure that the Federal Government backs
up its strong support for the high yielding business tourism
sector by the appropriate allocation of structure and
resources. MIAA will continue to work with our industry
colleagues at the AACB and with
Elizabeth Rich from BECA. As they
say... watch this space!

Where to From Here
It is planned that the MIAA Branch PD program from January 2004
onwards will incorporate the work done on the national curriculum.
Already, the residential course for August 2003 has incorporated the topics
and concepts. For the remainder of 2003, MIAA will be finalising the
program as a result of feedback from the Branches and members. Feedback
can be forwarded to Fiona Kelly, MIAA's National Business and
Professional Development Manager on fkelly@miaanet.com.au. In
November, a calendar of workshops will be prepared for each branch. The
topics chosen will depend on the size and needs of each State. The calendar
will also continue to incorporate other branch PD activities, such as Big Day
In and targeted presentations identified as appropriate for the branch. In
other words, the national curriculum is not the sole source of MIAA PD, as
the conference and other planned activities will continue to broaden the
opportunities available to members and the industry at large.
