t is not surprising that when
car collectors get together
for a rally there is also a col-
lection of great watches present.
This year the second annual Go-
ing to the Sun Rally in Montana
featured cars of extraordinary cal-
iber. The watches sported by the
drivers were also in a class unto
themselves.
The Going to the Sun Rally
is a charitable gathering of vin-
tage cars and their drivers who get
an opportunity to drive some of
the country's most beautiful back
roads. Charles Kuralt, the CBS
correspondent, once named this
rally's first stretch of road the most
beautiful highway in America.
The Beartooth Highway (US
212), completed in 1936, offers
travelers an amazing transition
from three lush National For-
ests to high tundra dotted with
turquoise-blue alpine lakes on
switchbacks that will take your
breath away every quarter mile.
With over twenty peaks exceed-
ing 12,000 feet, taking the cars
from about 4,000 feet in elevation to
over 10,000 feet leaves little doubt
that the scenery and views would be
nothing short of world-class.
And this stretch of road was just
the first in a five-day rally.
