Dreams of hope, dreams destroyed, life imagined, life as it is. Set in a grey and dingy unnamed Czech city,
“Something Like Happiness” is “a strange film of optimism” in the midst of disappointment,
unexpected twists and turns in plans, and long-time friends with changing circumstances.
Written and directed by noted Czech filmmaker Bohdun Slama (Wild Bees), the story centers on Monika (Tatiana
Vilhelmova), whose boyfriend now lives in California, with plans to send her a ticket to join him. Dasha (Anna
Geislerova), a troubled friend unable to care for her two children, and an admirer, Tonik (Pavel Liska), who grew up in the
same apartment building, figure prominently in Monika’s decision to postpone her trip to California when the ticket
does arrive. New York Film Festival reviewer Martha Fischer, finds Something Like Happiness one of two best films of
the festival, “a film of thrilling complexity and depth... (and) also a work of sneaky power and innovation.”
